Assistance and Resources in Time of Need and Bad Weather

Many local organizations have come together to share resources an individual may need during the bad weather or unfortunate situations. If you find yourself or someone you know in need, please call the Whitewater Communications Center at 262-473-0555 ext. 4 or dial 211 and visit 211 online.

AREA ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

  • Spirit of Hope Homeless Shelter: 262-725-2016 – see website for shelter dates and locations. Single men’s shelter that receives funding from the United Way of Walworth County and operates from the end of October to the beginning/middle of April.
  • Twin Oaks Shelter: 262‐882‐3662. W9665 Hwy 14, Darien, WI 53114. Provides 12 residential units where homeless households can stay up to 60 days.
  • Bethel House: 262‐473‐2715. 133 S Franklin St, Whitewater WI 53190. Seven private housing units where families can live up to one year. They also provide a homelessness prevention program that can give financial assistance to families one time per year to prevent homelessness.
  • House of Mercy Homeless Center: 608‐754‐0045. 320 Lincoln St, Janesville, WI 53548. 25 bed homeless shelter for single women and families. Clients can stay up to 30 days and program provides access to housing, job placement and child care resources.
  • GIFTS Men’s Shelter: 608‐728‐4941. 1025 N Washington St, Janesville, WI 53548. Provides food, shelter and life recovery services to men.
  • Catholic Charities: 262‐473‐3143: St Patrick’s Catholic Church, 262‐473‐5555: Warhawk Catholic, 608‐752‐4906: Janesville, 920‐563‐9375: Fort Atkinson. Can provide assistance to families or single women looking for shelter or rent help.
  • The Salvation Army: 773‐205‐3520 Emergency Assistance Hotline or 262‐547‐7367 Waukesha County office. Provides vouchers for temporary, emergency lodging at Whitewater hotels. Contact Angela for additional lodging assistance if need is greater than 1‐2 nights.
  • Community Action Incorporated of Walworth County: 262‐728‐8296. 1545 Hobbs Drive, Delavan, WI 53115. Provides services for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Also provides assistance with the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), child care and weatherization.
  • Low Income Housing: Walworth County Housing Authority 262‐723‐6123. Address: 735 Hwy 67, Elkhorn, WI 53121 262‐723‐6123. Jefferson County Housing Authority 920‐674‐5294. Address: 431 N Elizabeth Ave, Jefferson, WI 53190.
  • Walworth County Department of Health and Human Services: 262‐741‐3200. Address: 1910 County Road NN, Elkhorn WI 53121. Hours: Monday through Friday 7:00am‐7:00pm. Assists in crisis intervention and the following benefit services: Health Care (Badger Care Plus and Medicaid), FoodShare, Child Care Assistance (Wisconsin SHARES Program), Home Energy Assistance (WHEAP) and Wisconsin Works (W2).
  • Jefferson County Department of Health and Human Services: 920‐674‐3105. Address: 1541 Annex Rd, Jefferson, WI 53549 . Assists in crisis intervention and the following benefit services: Health Care (Badger Care Plus and Medicaid), FoodShare, Child Care Assistance (Wisconsin SHARES Program), Home Energy Assistance (WHEAP) and Wisconsin Works (W2).
  • New Beginnings APFV (Association for the Prevention of Family Violence): 262‐723‐4653 (24 hour hotline) 2 office locations: 143 W Main St, Whitewater, WI 53190 and 735 N Wisconsin St, Suite 101, Elkhorn, WI 53121. Provides support and services to people affected by domestic abuse, sexual violence, stalking and human trafficking. This includes crisis intervention, legal advocacy, safety planning, individual counseling, housing advocacy, children’s services, medical advocacy and information and referral to other relevant community services.
  • 211: Dial 2‐1‐1 or text 53190 to 898211. Assists callers seeking information or dealing with challenges related to housing, utility shut offs, family crisis, legal issues, alcohol and drug recovery, food assistance, employment and more. Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in over 180 languages. 

Food Assistance:

  • Whitewater Community Food Pantry: 146 W North St, Whitewater, WI 53190. Hours: Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30am to noon. Contact: Barb Quast 262‐473‐5792.
  • Warhawk Pantry: Drumlin Hall Room #143. Hours: Tuesday and Wednesdays 2pm‐5pm. Primarily for students, faculty and staff (community members will not be turned away but they ask you initially seek assistance at the Whitewater Community Food Pantry). Contact: 262‐472‐1860.
  • The Community Space: 834 E Milwaukee St, Whitewater, WI 53190. Free food, clothing, housewares and furniture. No income or residency requirements. Hours: Tuesday: 8:30am‐11:00am. Wednesday: 3:30pm‐ 7:00pm. Thursday: 8:30am‐11:00am. Saturday: 8:30am‐2:00pm. The Little Free Pantry in their vestibule is open 24/7. Contact: 262‐379‐0187.
